sales people gone where

Why is it so hard to find great (or even just “good”) sales people these days?
- Is it the “Y Generation” (the “me me me, fuck you, generation”) problem, who want high salaries without high performance? (Note: I don’t think ALL Gen Y’ers are like this, but unfortunately a LARGE percentage are VERY much like this.)
- Or is it just the bad rep that the word (and role) “sales” seems to have gained over the past two decades?
- Or is it the “conservative (risk averse) nature” about having a guaranteed (ie: boring) salary mentality that the working force is getting trapped in to?
As you can probably gauge, I believe it is a mixture of the three points above.
ineedhits (our Search Engine Marketing firm) is currently trying to hire a few new (good to excellent) sales team members and we are very disappointed with the low response rate, and the low quality of those that did respond. What ever happened to trying to “sell yourself”? If you can’t convince us (or even yourself), how are you going to convince potential customers.
People with the right mind set, can achieve an EXCELLENT overall salary, if the job offers a decent base salary, with achievable targets combined with attractive commissions. Come on people, set yourself a challenge, go out and achieve it and then be rewarded!!

The reason that you can’t get good sales people is you need to look beyond the person
Just because they are fat or a bit unattractive does not mean they can not be a good or excellent sales person
I am overweight but boy can i do my job well
My last firm Suncorp/Gio gave me ago and i was one of their better sales people
As a teenager/young adult i was given a weekend/part time sales job
The attractive nice figured girl was given the full time job
The boss regretted it in the end as she relied on her looks and couldn’t sell anything
I made more for him part time than she made full time and he had to pay her a lot more
By the time he realised his mistake and offered me a full time job i had already found another job and left
Give imperfect people a go and see what happens
You might just be surprised

Deb – thanks for the comment.
Not sure if it was intentional, but your comment is suggesting that I don’t hire “fat or unattractive” sales people. This is completely wrong. It doesn’t matter if you are fat, unattractive, or both. I don’t care.
As long as you have confidence and a bit of cockiness – and can do the job bloody well – you’re hired!
Cheers

PS: The “attractive lady” image used in the blog post is actually representing “the customer”.
