Blog finds new home
Jun 22nd

Welcome to my blog’s new home!
Sure – the design has changed (and I hope you like it as much as I do) – however more importantly my blog can finally call the domain claycook.net its real home (no redirects required any longer).
For the techies out there… I am hosting it on BlueHost, and if someone were to visit my old blog address claycook.wordpress.com, they should (in theory) be redirected to this shiny new home.
Fail to fire, you lose
Jun 8th

Last Sunday I saw two perfect examples of when people (or teams) play “within themselves” and fail to; take the game on, play to their assets, and play to WIN!
- The first was when the Dockers lost to the Adelaide Crows. Did they turn up expecting Adelaide to lay down? Maybe (obviously their first mistake), but I think the main issue was that the ground was so slippery (due to flooding the week before) that for the first quarter the Dockers couldn’t keep their footing. This resulted in them making a lot of turnovers which meant Adelaide (used to the ground conditions) took control of the game. The longer the game went on the more the Dockers went into their shell and never ended up firing. What should they have done? Change their strategy slightly (less hand balling to a stationary player around the contest that would be required to take off or change directions on the slippery ground, and more hand balling to a player running past already headed towards goal), and then attack long and hard, and play to win.
- The second was when Sam Stosur played in the French Open Final, and played to “not lose”. Sam unfortunately forgot what style of game got her to the final (hard and attacking serves and big forehand winners) in the first place. She probably was so nervous that rather than risking it all and playing he usual attacking game, she retreated within herself and played a style of game hoping that he oponent would make mistakes and lose.
Big lesson in life, “Play to WIN”
sales people gone where
May 24th

Why is it so hard to find great (or even just “good”) sales people these days?
- Is it the “Y Generation” (the “me me me, fuck you, generation”) problem, who want high salaries without high performance? (Note: I don’t think ALL Gen Y’ers are like this, but unfortunately a LARGE percentage are VERY much like this.)
- Or is it just the bad rep that the word (and role) “sales” seems to have gained over the past two decades?
- Or is it the “conservative (risk averse) nature” about having a guaranteed (ie: boring) salary mentality that the working force is getting trapped in to?
As you can probably gauge, I believe it is a mixture of the three points above.
ineedhits (our Search Engine Marketing firm) is currently trying to hire a few new (good to excellent) sales team members and we are very disappointed with the low response rate, and the low quality of those that did respond. What ever happened to trying to “sell yourself”? If you can’t convince us (or even yourself), how are you going to convince potential customers.
People with the right mind set, can achieve an EXCELLENT overall salary, if the job offers a decent base salary, with achievable targets combined with attractive commissions. Come on people, set yourself a challenge, go out and achieve it and then be rewarded!!
Freo roll Sydney Swans
May 23rd

It was FANTASTIC to see Freo continue their impressive form yesterday.
Here are my thoughts on the game…
- Fremantle 100 defeated Sydney 63
- I was very nervous before the game due to Michael Johnson being suspended (for drugs), and Luke McPharlin being injured (likely be out for a few weeks). I thought that having these two “talls” out of our team that it would really take the wind out of our sails. They have both been critical in our form so far this year.
- Kepler Bradley was fortunately selected to play. He played very well again, and I still am struggling to understand why he was dropped after his nearly best on ground performance in Brisbane two weeks ago. I suspect that the coach doesn’t consider him part of his “ideal team”. I hope Harvey changes his opinion as Kepler provides great support all over the ground… he is tall, fast, can mark well (down back and up front). He is also getting better with his disposal. 2 goals.
- “The Freo Brand”. It seems that over the pre-season Freo decided they needed a “brand” of football to play and concentrate on building. I LOVE this Freo brand… it seems to concentrate on continuous pressure on the ball carrier, go through the centre of the ground, keep the ball moving fast, and kick to the team’s advantage. Freo have played all their games this year with this brand, and its fantastic to see that they finally consistent with their game style and intensity. We have only lost two games this year, against Sk Kilda we only just lost and fell away towards the end of a very high pressure game, and in our loss to Collingwood we fell away after half time. The Collingwood loss seemed to be due to us running out of steam… probably due to the short Brisbane trip, and a few injuries during the game.
- Tackles = 97!!! This is part of the “Freo Brand”. Anything above 80 and we should win easy.
- Chris Tarrant – isn’t he playing great? I am amazed how well he is playing since lining up in the back line last year. I would suggest he will be an all Australian if he continues this form.
- Matthew Pavlich – played a great game like usual. My only criticism is that he doesn’t chase enough in the forward line if the opposition has the ball, and possibly that he should move himself on to the ball more often during a game. 3 goals.
- Michael Barlow – another very good match. What a find!!! He was tagged all day by Brett Kirk, who tried his hardest to rough him up.
- Stephen Hill – was well held all day. Hardly touched the ball. Great to see that we don’t need him to star for us to win.
- Sandilands – he really knows what he is capable of now. Its great to see him assert himself on the game. I especially like when he takes a pack mack, and snatches the ball out of the ruck.
- Paul Hasleby – played well in the forward line. He is no longer the dominant midfielder that he once was, but he can certainly read the play well and take a strong mark. 2 goals.
- Nathan Fyfe – what a great little contributor. He is as skinny as a rake, however he reads the play well, keeps his eye on the ball, and is likely to be one of the best marks in the team. He reminds me of Brett Heady when he runs into on coming traffic.
- Anthony Grover – great to see him slot straight back in to the side and play a very strong key defensive role.
- Adam McPhee – IMO I think Harvey sees McPhee in his “ideal team”. Unfortunately McPhee is not the player he used to be, even though he kicked 2 goals. He has bulked up too much, and doesn’t seem to have full use of his shoulders, which means he struggles to take marks overhead. He continues to turn over the ball, and give away free kicks for late bumps, holding the ball, etc. I can understand the need to have experienced players in your team to make the younger ones feel safe and confident, however maybe we have enough with Pavlich, Sandilands, Grover, Tarrant etc…
- Playing in the wet. The last half of the game was largely played in light to heavy rain. I was concerned for about 5 minutes that we didn’t change gears fast enough, and move away from the dry handball strategy to the wet kick long strategy.
- Clay Cook medal: 3 Hasleby, 2 Pavlich, 1 Bradley (close: Sandilands, Tarrant, Grover)
- Sydney – were a few big men down on the day, however their general poor play was probably more due to Freo’s pressure. Tadhg Kennelly (star backman) was injured early in the game and Daniel Bradshaw (full forward star) didn’t play the second half. Adam Goodes also had a poor disposal day.
- 7 wins / 2 losses – best start ever. Looks like we will be placed 3rd on the ladder still.
- Kangaroos at Subi next weekend. North are not playing well at the moment, traditionally they were a side that were most dangerous when their backs were to the wall, however I think that time has passed and we should win convincingly.
ruptured achilles
May 18th

Here I sit in hospital after surgery on my “ruptured Achilles tendon”, after 2 weeks of laying around waiting, the surgery was all over in 45 mins and I didn’t feel a thing (thank god for general anesthetic).
It seems this is a common injury for “Weekend Warriors” who play tennis. I was playing tennis but it was a Tuesday night! So maybe I am a Midweek Warrior?
If interested in discusting photos - here and here and here are some very disturbing ones of ruptured Achilles Tendons… thank god I didn’t look at these before surgery.
Seems I am going to be immobile for a long time (apparently it’s 9 months until I am running again). So I guess I may as well invest some time into this “social media” stuff again.
slow the fuck down
Aug 9th

- Point #1 below is the ‘major one’. In my mind it makes up about 90% of the positive effect.
- Yes, there are more than 10, this is a ‘work in progress’.
People are always convincing themselves that they will be happy ‘when they have a bigger house, or a new car, or a holiday’. Haven’t you noticed once you have these things, you start convincing yourself you will be happier when you have ‘x’. Think – their are people less fortunate than me that think “I would be happier if I had all the stuff Clay has”…
Hurrying and being ultra-efficient are very often enemies to true enjoyment in life. Enjoy ‘the process, enjoy the journey’. Why be in such a hurry to get onto the next ‘job’? There is always a lot to do, if you keep rushing from job to job, you will never enjoy any period of time.
Why are kids so happy? = because they live in the present… they dont worry about the past, or things coming up in the future.
Have you ever been to a 3rd world country? If so, you may have noticed how happy the general population is. In my experience they are generally far happier than most communities I have spent my time living around, yet they have far less personal items and wealth. Why is this? I am convinced one of the reasons is due to them living in the present far more often than most. They don’t seem to worry about the past, or what is coming up in the future, they are just living the moment, whatever it may be.
3. Stop beating yourself up. Stop the negative thoughts. Stop being so hard on yourself. Massively decrease the pressure, 90% of the pressure you feel is self induced!
4. Think “What’s it like being me?”. If someone were me for 24 hrs… would they go away saying… “wow that guy loves life and has a great life”… or would they go away saying things like… “how stressful”, how boring… etc

social or focus
Feb 13th

How embarrassing, I haven’t blogged for four months! I don’t really even have time to do this blog post, however it is probably important that I do at least this one to explain why, so here goes…
Recently I have been focusing on “getting the job done” and “doing less in less time”. As a result I have been spending FAR less time on things like Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, and blogs (including my own blog).
I have actually been picking up the telephone (remember what that is?) rather than emailing in a lot of instances… and the results are amazing… things get done a lot faster!
What do I mean by “doing less in less time“? It’s my own intepretation of a learning that is in the 4 hour work week book. Essentially I intepret it as; do only high priority items (ie: less things), and set yourself less time to achieve them in (ie: by setting less time, you dont stuff around with them… you just get on with it and complete the item. Less time also means I set much less time in the day for ‘work related’ activities.).
So, you probably wont see me on around here, at least for now anyway, until I get distratcted again…
Balanced Life Wheel
Nov 4th

For a few years now I have been trying to balance my life better. It used to be largely all work, then all leasure, then all kids (and immediate family), and then work + kids. I have never been good at balance, I think I have an addictive behaviour.
Anyway, about 6 months ago I got a post-it note and drew a circle and split it into four quarters and wrote down four items that I thought I needed to concentrate on to have a happily balanced life. Since then it has been growing and growing, showing me that to have a truely happy balanced life I need to make time for a lot of things! Here is the list I have come up with to date…
- Family time
- Time with Rachel (wife)
- Time with Children
- Time with friends
- Time alone
- Work (Vibe Capital, Minti, ineedhits, Gooruze)
- Admin (Finances, cash flow management)
- Excercise
- Spend time outdoors
- Hobby (Movies)
- Be well rested
- Healthy Diet
- Education/Learning
It is impossible for me to fit all of these into a single day, so I try and spend some time on each item each week.
Feedback?
- What do you think I have missed?
- Do you try balance your life?
- Is your life completely out of balance?
- When you are running a start-up is it even possible to have life balance?
- When you have a young family is it possible?
- Is this just a crock of shit?
